Vieux couple marié depuis des années, Joan et Larry meurent à une semaine d'intervalle. À leur arrivée dans l’au-delà, ils découvrent que chaque âme doit choisir où - et avec qui - passer l’éternité. Alors qu’ils s’apprêtent à rejoindre leur paradis commun, un fantôme du passé réapparaît : Luke, le premier mari de Joan, mort durant la guerre de Corée, qui l’attend patiemment depuis 67 ans.
